The RIGHT sample document test!!

Fortunately nobody has commented on the sample exercise I put up yesterday, so there's been no wasted effort (whew). So, here it the right sample document test. It would be great if you could put up your comments in response to the questions raised by these two documents. We'll gather up you thoughts in the tute of week 11 as a way of finetuning your preparation for the final test which happens in week 12.
I hope this is clear enough to read. I'll have paper copies for us to work with in week 11.

Sample Document test

As before - please write brief points in answer to the questions embedded in the document. When we meet in week 11 we can bring these thoughts together to prepare you for the final test in week 12.
If the text is not very clear, please check the version of this which is available on Blackboard.

Week 8 Virtual Tutorial

This image is called "Meiji Restoration". Can you explain why?

This week, because of the Anzac Day Holiday, we are having a virtual tutorial rather than meeting face to face. The topic is The Rise of Japan and you have already had the lecture on this by Adam Clulow in Week 7. The readings for this week are on pp.107-115 of the unit reader and are very accessible. You might also like to check out two youtube clips located on the right under Useful (and interesting) links:

First Sino-Japanese War
Meiji Restoration

The question that you should respond to by comment is:

"What role did war, and preparations for war, play in the cementing of Japanese national identity in the Meiji period (1868-1912)?"

Welcome to the Nations at War blog

As a way of sharing our collected wisdom and kicking off your revision programme please answer each of the 4 questions below with a simple paragraph. Once you have done that you might like to respond to the work of others with queries or comments. The tab above entitled "Exam Questions" has a full copy of all questions as well as the assessment criteria.

The Week 8 Tutorial Question will be launched 21 April and will also require a response, though this can be brief and to the point. I'm hoping we can emulate some of the enthusiasm for discussion which has characterised the live tutorials.

Question 1

In what ways did nationalism change its character and meaning from the French Revolution to 1900?

Question 2

In what ways did thinking about war change in the course of the 19th century?

Question 3

What did being a "citizen" mean in nineteenth-century nations? Did it change over time?
